Scarness Caravan Park recycled in more ways than one

The Scarness Caravan Park redevelopment is well underway with large sections of the demolished buildings and facilities being repurposed and recycled.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor David Lee said the hardwood trusses from one of the Scarness Caravan Park buildings had been repurposed on a shed at Biggenden.

“The demolition crew from Hervey Bay company Advance Civil have carefully pulled the buildings apart to repurpose or recycle as much as possible,” he said.

“The recycling efforts are great for the environment as less goes into landfill while it has also allowed the contractor to keep costs down.”

The demolition work is part of the move to rebuild the Scarness Caravan Park.

All the facilities, the underground power, water, drainage, and sewer systems along with the above ground facilities and roads are being removed as part of the redevelopment of the park.

“The concrete and tiles from the amenities blocks will be crushed and used for underground drainage hardstand areas,” Paul Guest from Advance Civil said.

“The corrugated iron was sent to the scrap metal merchants; the concrete slabs from the old caravan sites will be crushed and used in road base.

“The old bitumen is mixed into the new road base as it helps to bind it together.

“Where possible the hardwood timber and pavers will also be reused.

“The former residence on the site will be removed and rebuilt on another site in Hervey Bay.”

The demolition project is on schedule and a second section of the park will open for self-contained RVs over the Christmas holidays.

“We will be able to hand back more space so more RVs will be able to visit during the Christmas New Year period,” Mr Guest said.

The extra space for visitors is very good news, Cr Lee said.

“The caravan park visitors are extremely important for the Scarness businesses so the prospects of having more visitors than first anticipated is welcome news to businesses that have been struggling due to COVID.”

The additional sites will be available from December 11 until January 11 and the sites currently opened within the Eastern section will remain open until the end of February.  Bookings are already being taken by the park managers who can be contacted on 4128 1274.

Work is scheduled to restart after Christmas on the western section of the park on January 11.
