Local Law 2 - Animal Management

Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011 (PDF) and Subordinate Local Law No. 2 (Animal Management) 2011 (PDF) apply across the Fraser Coast region with the most recent versions of both laws being gazetted on 22 December 2023.  These local laws were originally gazetted on 14 February 2014 and have been amended over time.  These amendments are consolidated into an updated version to make them clear and easy to use. 

Local laws regulate and manage the keeping and control of animals within the local government area in a way that:

  • Balances community expectations with the rights of individuals; 
  • Protects the community against risks to health and safety;
  • Prevents pollution and other environmental damage and
  • Protects the amenity of the local community and environment.

The Animal Management local laws achieve this by providing for: 

  • The regulation of the keeping of animals in terms of how many, what type, how, and where animals can be kept:
  • The prescription of minimum standards for keeping animals;
  • The proper control of animals in public places and koala conservation areas;
  • The management of dangerous or aggressive animals other than dogs;
  • The seizure and destruction of animals in certain circumstances;
  • The establishment and administration of animal pounds and
  • To regulate the breeding of cats and dogs.
