Council will ask the state government for up to $250,000 to pay for a feasibility study to establish a boardwalk from the Granville Bridge to the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough.

The boardwalk is part Brolga to Bridge Concept Plan adopted by the former Maryborough City Council in 2007.

Council will also ask the Member for Maryborough, Bruce Saunders, to support the funding request, especially for grants targeting pre-planning (development of concept/master plans and feasibility plans) so Council can have shovel-ready projects eligible for funding.

The establishment of a boardwalk from the Granville Bridge to the Brolga Theatre is the most significant missing piece from the Council’s 2007 Bridge to Brolga Concept plan, Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“Rather than have just a land-based boardwalk, Council wants to explore the feasibility of a structure like the floating Riverwalk that was recently built by the Brisbane City Council.

“The floating boardwalk would be built on piles in the river.

“It could have separate pathways for cyclists and pedestrians and viewing platforms.”

The boardwalk was part of an effort to refocus attention on the Mary River which included the development of the Mary River Parklands and development of Wharf Street as a major outdoor venue, as well as developing linkages through the city to connect the river to the CBD.

“The proposed boardwalk is a long-standing goal and which would deliver benefits to residents and visitors,” Cr Sanderson said.

“Due to the risk of flooding a feasibility study is an important first step to ensure the project’s viability and likely construction costs.”
