Council investigating beach incidents

Turtle Hatchlings

Fraser Coast residents are being reminded dogs are only allowed on designated beaches after about 20 turtle hatchlings were killed by two dogs on a Point Vernon Beach last week.

“The turtles were killed because dog owners were irresponsible and let their dogs roam free while they went for a swim,” Cr David Lewis said.

“A resident managed to save 40 hatchlings by ushering them to the water but was unable to catch the dogs.

“Dogs are prohibited from this bit of beach because it is a turtle nesting area.

“Council is investigating the incident and following up with the resident.

“I urge pet owners to do the right thing and be responsible: only walk your pets on designated beaches.

“The beach entrances are sign posted to alert people if dogs are prohibited, allowed on leash or off leash.

“Maps outlining the designation of the beaches and fenced off-leash areas are available on the Council website here.”

When using off-leash areas, dogs still must be under the owners’ control.

“You cannot just unleash your dog and let it roam anywhere. Owners need to be close enough to give voice commands and control their pet; not 100 metres away swimming or talking,” Cr Lewis said.

Council is also asking residents for help to identify vandals who spray painted 22 beach access signs along the foreshore from the Scarness Pier to the eastern side of the Hervey Bay Surf Club in Torquay.

“We are reviewing CCTV footage and have reported the incident to the police,” Cr Lewis said.

“The vandalism will cost all ratepayers as new signs will have to be ordered and the damaged signs replaced.

“Although damaged, it is still possible to make out the message that dogs are not allowed on that section of the beach.”
