Calling for more Maryborough Open Garden entries

Maryborough gardeners are being invited to open their gates to the public for the city’s annual Open Garden event on the weekend of August 28 and 29.

Mayor George Seymour said Maryborough Open Gardens was a fantastic event were gardeners shared their love of horticulture and opened their gardens for visitors to enjoy and be inspired.

“We are currently seeking new gardens for both the town and country categories,” Cr Seymour said.

“While several new gardens have already registered, including a few younger gardens that are entering for the very first time, more will add to the diversity in garden styles, sizes and themes.”

Formerly held as part of Maryborough Open House, this annual garden experience now runs over two days as a stand-alone event.

In 2020, Maryborough Open Gardens transitioned from being Council-led to community-led, as a stand-alone event held over two days.

On the back of its success, the event was nominated in the 2021 Fraser Coast Australia Day Awards.

Cr Seymour said Council was pleased to advise it had entered into a sponsorship agreement with the Maryborough Horticultural Society to support the new arrangements.

Horticultural Society president Joy Duke said members were looking to build on the success of past years and increase the number of visitors, which was more than 5700 in 2020.

“As well as welcoming our local residents, we are also hoping that visitors are able to come for the weekend and enjoy all that our region has to offer.”

Town gardens will open on Saturday, August 29, and country gardens on Sunday, August 30.

The event will operate under a COVID-safe plan as required by the Queensland Government.
