The Halcro Street Community Centre in Point Vernon has become more accessible after a much-anticipated facelift.

The work at the Fraser Coast Regional Council owned facility has included new access ramps, upgraded bathrooms, electric doors, asphalted carpark, a new picket fence and painting the exterior of the centre.

Cr Zane O’Keefe, chair of Council’s Inclusive Access Advisory Committee, said it was rewarding to see Council investing in supporting people with mobility issues.

“We miss out on so much when we can’t involve every member of our community so these type of access improvements are good for everyone,” he said.

Located at 30 Halcro Street, the site is also home to Home Assist Secure and Fraser Coast Community Radio FM 107.5.

The community centre plays host to a range of volunteer-run groups and houses the Senior in Focus Project.

In addition to the accessibility works, a number of Fraser Coast Regional Council staff volunteered on a Saturday recently to refurbish the community garden at the facility.

This included building mulching bays, storage, painting, weeding, mowing, and jet cleaning paved areas.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said community centres were an integral part of our region.

“They bring people together, allow people to try new things, start new hobbies and meet people,” he said.

“This is a place for people to interact and enjoy life, so it is essential it is used by as many community members as possible.”

The eight-week project to improve the centre’s accessibility cost $142,000 and is expected to be completed this week.
