The Fraser Coast Regional Council will lease the former Takura School to the Veterans of Australia Association to run health and wellbeing programs.

Under the agreement adopted at the Council meeting today (Wednesday, May 26), the veteran’s group was given three years to secure funding to build a storage facility at the site before the 10-year lease starts.

The building, which is in listed on the Local Heritage Register, has been vacant for many years.

The project will bring benefits to veterans and the community, Councillor Jade Wellings said.

“As the wife of a veteran, I am surrounded by veterans, young and old, many of whom are facing various struggles,” she said.

“It was suggested to me by many young veterans that they are looking for things to do, especially those that do not involve alcohol.

“This proposal gives veterans a good positive project, meaning, purpose and an opportunity to be part of a community and to develop friendships.

“It will also deliver a great outcome for the Takura and Fraser Coast community generally though the restoration of a run down but significant and loved local building.”
