World Environment Day tree planting
Fraser Coast Regional Council will celebrate World Environment Day with a month of engaging education events and awesome giveaways.

World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 every year and this year will mark the launch of a “Decade of Ecosystem Restoration”.

Four guided walks, two planting days, educational gardening workshops and a kid’s nature hunt are on offer for all environment lovers.

Families who can’t make any of the events can still get involved with the kids’ drawing competition or by using the free download on Councils website to start ecofriendly conversations at home.

Councillor Jade Wellings said Council was seeking to engage community members of all ages to help highlight the importance of ongoing restoration work.

“The Fraser Coast has very valuable urban ecosystems so it’s important that we respect and nurture our unique natural environment,” she said.

“Council’s Natural Environment team are coordinating a range of community events that will showcase some of their fantastic projects and demonstrate the benefits of Council and the community working together.

“By embracing the launch of a decade of ecosystem restoration, we are able to encourage the entire community to make better choices for the environment moving forward.

“We cannot turn back time. But we can grow trees, green our cities, rewild our gardens, change our diets and clean up rivers and coasts.”

The month of environment events follow Council’s recent endorsement of the Greening the Fraser Coast Strategy, which aims to provide comfortable places and spaces through a range of tree planting projects as part of an overall commitment to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.
