Australia day

The iconic breakfast and games organised by the Rotary Club of Maryborough Sunrise is one of four 2022 Australia Day events to be sponsored by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

The club has a longstanding tradition of organising the event which, includes a free community breakfast in Queens Park, Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

At its meeting on Wednesday November 24, Council approved four grants for Australia Day events under the 2021-22 Community Grants Scheme.

The grants include:

  • The Rotary Club of Maryborough Sunrise, $1,500;
  • The Hervey Bay Historical Society Museum Association, $1,990;
  • The Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association $2,000, and;
  • The Hervey Bay Bowls Club, $2,000.

“Australia Day events are well patronised,” Cr Seymour said.

“As a community we enjoy our outdoor activities and sport. Through these grants we are able to celebrate both as well as pay tribute to the many volunteers and unsung heroes that work tirelessly to make the region such a wonderful place.”

Visitors to the Hervey Bay Historical Society Museum Association event at its Zephyr Street museum and village will be able to experience early settler village life, browse the historical displays, and participate in hands-on activities that bring history to life.

The Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association, in Colyton Street, Torquay, and Hervey Bay Bowls Club in Denmans Camp Road, Scarness, will hold fun days.

The Council’s citizenship and awards ceremonies would be held at the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough on Wednesday 26 January.

The Citizenship Ceremony will start at 9am and be followed by the presentation of Australia Day Awards at 10am.

Everyone is welcome.

“Australia Day is a day to reflect, respect and celebrate the Australian spirit and the best of this country – our mateship, our sense of community and our resilience,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“I look forward to presenting the annual Australia Day Awards to local residents and groups who have made outstanding contributions to the Fraser Coast community and welcoming our newest citizens.”
