Council prepares for Maryborough flooding

The Fraser Cost Regional Council is urging Maryborough CBD businesses and residents in low lying areas to start preparing for a flood.

Council is preparing for the Mary River to flood and inundate the Maryborough CBD, Lamington and Granville bridges by this afternoon (Saturday, January 08) due to high rainfall in the upper catchment from ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth.

The current forecast is for the Mary River to exceed the minor flood level of 5metres during today and may exceed the major flood level of 9 metres during Sunday. This is approximately 4 metres above the Lamington bridge.

Council is preparing to install the temporary flood levee in the Maryborough CBD this morning and is urging CBD shops and business to start preparations to evacuate.

It is anticipated that the Lamington Bridge will be closed at 10am today (Saturday, January 08). Detour will be via Iindah Road and the on/off ramps on the Bruce Highway.

Adelaide Street (between Kent Street and Sussex Street) will be closed at 10:30am today (Saturday, January 08) to start preparation on the installation of the flood levy wall and pumping equipment this afternoon.

The Granville Bridge will be closed by midday today and may not be open for several days.

Residents should continue to listen to weather warnings provided on ABC radio and provided through the Bureau of Meteorology website.

If residents require storm or flood assistance please call SES 132500.

For all life-threatening emergencies please call 000.

If residents choose to self-evacuate the Brolga Theatre will be a temporary respite facility from 1pm Saturday.
