Queensland Reds Fraser Coast Training camp cancelled

The rapid spread of the COVID-19 Omicron variety has forced the Queensland Reds Rugby Union team to pull out of a five-day pre-season training scheduled on the Fraser Coast from which was set to start on Sunday (January 16).

“It is very disappointing that Reds players have been laid low by the virus,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“We hope that we will be able to re-schedule the camp later in the year or the beginning of next year.”

During their Fraser Coast stay players were scheduled to assist with clinics for juniors and meet and greet fans.

It's unfortunate we've had to cancel our much-anticipated pre-season camp on the Fraser Coast due to the unfolding Covid situation in the state," said QRU General Manager - Professional Rugby Sam Cordingley.

"We were looking forward to going up there as a whole squad to train and connect with the local community, but the health and wellbeing of everyone involved - both Reds players and staff, plus our Fraser Coast fans was a determining factor.

"We'd like to thank the Fraser Coast Regional Council and everyone in the region for their assistance and we remain hopeful of getting up there soon."

Following the redevelopment of the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct, the Fraser Coast region has become a hub for elite sportspeople and events, while Rugby is continuing to grow in the region ahead of February’s inaugural Fraser Coast Rugby 7s Festival.

“We were excited to be welcoming the entire Queensland Reds squad to the region and hosting some of the best Rugby Union players in the world,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“Council will continue to invite state, national and international teams to the Fraser Coast as part of our focus on growing our local economy; ensuring we have a healthy and active community and offering opportunities for local sportspeople to meet, be inspired by and train with high-calibre athletes.”
