Maryborough identity Alison Coleman is the inspiration for the 39th mural to adorn the walls of the city’s CBD.

“With her hat festooned with colourful feathers, Alison was a regular sight in the CBD for 37 years ensuring that the streets were always clean and tidy,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

In 2018 the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s long-time street cleaner retired on her 70th birthday after 30 years and eight months on the job.

“Alison did a remarkable job to keep the CBD clean and tidy and was a great ambassador for Maryborough, helping many visitors with directions and information,” Cr Sanderson said.

“She was easily recognisable with her distinctive feathered hat festooned with red-tailed black cockatoo, pheasant, parrot, emu and guinea fowl feathers.”

The Maryborough Mural Project has selected Woodgate-based artist Julie Davis to paint the mural on the wall of the Bearing Service Building in Richmond Street, Maryborough.

Davis was the overall winner of the prestigious $10,000 Bundaberg Art Prize 2021.

The mural of Alison is being funded from the Discretionary Fund allocation of Councillor Daniel Sanderson.

“I am delighted to support this mural; everyone loved Alison; she was an institution,” he said.
