Book mark winners 2022

Bold colours, mysterious expressions and pets are highlights of the artworks that have been chosen as the winners in the Fraser Coast Libraries’ Design-a-Bookmark competition.

Residents were encouraged to unleash their artistic talent and enter the competition.

“The winning entries have been professionally printed and are available for free from the Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads library branches,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

The category winners included:

  • 6 years and under: Eden Sartori, the bold use of colour and textures in Eden’s drawing is delightful and creates a sense of movement in the drawing. The judge was captivated by the imaginative and quirky creatures in this work. Eden shows originality and flair.
  • 7-11 years: Catherine Cottrell, the pet portrait shows excellent proportion and perspective skills and also gives us a playful and curious friend to mark our place while reading.
  • 12-17 years: Katelyn Purnell, shows excellent control over the brush in her work. The scale, perspective and composition are suited to the medium of a bookmark perfectly. Like the Mona Lisa, the subject’s expression is mysterious and open to interpretation: it could be patient, withering, humorous or inviting.  The impenetrable thoughts of the glasses-wearing frog on a toadstool captivate the viewer’s imagination.
  • 18 years and older: Michelle Evans, the concept, theme and execution of this work shows a lot of skill and talent. The judge was impressed by the use of perspective and scale in the composition, the relevance of the subject and the stylistic realism.
  • People’s Choice Award: Alexandra White (from 12-17 years category)

The winners will also receive a $50 Fraser Coast Gift Card.

“Thank you to everyone who entered; our judge for the four age category winners, Hervey Bay Regional Gallery director Ashleigh Whatling; and everyone who voted in the People's Choice Award,” Cr Seymour said.

Fraser Coast Libraries receives financial assistance from the Queensland Government through State Library of Queensland.
