Fraser Coast Regional Council is urging residents to be vigilant when hiring cheap help on social media.

Multiple residents have fallen victim to a rubbish removalists scam operating on Facebook.

The removalists are offering cheap rates to collect rubbish and take it to the tip. However, some are not doing the right thing and illegally dump the rubbish instead.

Council’s Illegal Dumping Officer has identified there is a scam operator and an investigation is underway to take legal action against the scammers.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said it was confronting to see these large quantities of rubbish dumped into our beautiful environment, with an average of one case reported to Council every day.

“Littering and illegal dumping is a serious issue that can cause great harm to our animals and ecosystems and can endanger human health. They make our public places less enjoyable and are very expensive to clean up,” he said.

“Heavy fines for illegally dumping range from $2,205 to $10,338, with the potential for much higher penalties for matters prosecuted in Court.

“It is much cheaper and easier for individuals to dispose of waste correctly.”

Residents can protect themselves by asking for a receipt from the person they have hired and asking for evidence of disposal at a waste facility.

“There is no excuse for illegal dumping, and if you see it - report it,” Cr Truscott said. “Residents can report illegal dumping online, using the ‘Snap Send Solve’ app, or by calling Council on 1300 79 49 29.
