Council outlines solutions for Shell Street speeding

Fraser Coast Regional Council will ask the Queensland Police Service to keep an eye on traffic using Shell Street in Urangan following a petition from residents to install speed humps in the street to slow traffic.

“An investigation by Council roads engineers concluded that speed bumps were not a preferred treatment for local streets,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said.

“It indicated that the majority of vehicles travelling Shell Street are reaching 52.6km/hr, with only a few exceeding the posted speed limit.

“Instead, Council will refer the concerns of residents regarding speeding to the Queensland Police Service and encourage residents to contact the Police if they see motorists speeding.

“Council will continue to monitor traffic speeds on Shell Street during the 2022/23 traffic count.”

“Lane marking options will be considered at a future traffic advisory committee meeting”

Cr O’Keefe said recent installation of traffic calming devices at the intersection of Shell Street and Elizabeth Street where there had been three crashes in five years, aims to highlight the intersection for drivers.

“Council received Black Spot funding to install a traffic island, coloured threshold treatment. The project will help change traffic movements and improve safety for pedestrians crossing Shell Street.”
