Outdoor dining on the Fraser Coast given a push

Alfresco dining parklet

Two more parklets will be built by the Fraser Coast Regional Council to rekindle business interest in alfresco dining.

A parklet is a platform that is temporarily installed in one or two on-street-car-park spaces.

“Evidence from across the country indicates that parklets are successful in activating areas,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“After a 2013 Fraser Coast trial, two parklets were installed, one at Maddigans on the Hervey Bay Esplanade and one in front of Toast in Bazaar Street, Maryborough.

“The parklet idea has resurfaced following a recent visit to Maryborough by two renowned urban planners.

“We invited the former Lord Mayor of Adelaide and urban futurist, Stephen Yarwood; and the grandfather of urban planning in Queensland, Greg Vann, to have a first-hand look at the Maryborough CBD and lead a forum to help business owners and residents consider its future look and feel.

“They confirmed the parklet concept and other programs we have in place will help ensure our cities are vibrant, active and inviting places for all to enjoy.

“As a result, Council will build another two parklets so more businesses can give them a go.”

Research shows that parklets can make streets and public areas more liveable and people friendly.

The benefits of parklets include:

  • increased ‘foot traffic’ and vibrancy;
  • increased income for businesses taking advantage of outdoor eating opportunities;
  • attractive places to eat outside; and
  • encourage people to stay longer in an area.

Council will also set up a workgroup to identify suitable parklet locations and develop a Parklets Policy and Design Guidelines to manage parklet implementation and applications.

“Once the policy is finalised Council will host information sessions in Hervey Bay and Maryborough to brief businesses on parklet opportunities,” Cr Sanderson said.

“We will also talk with the Queensland Government about opportunities to support businesses establish parklets.

“Some states have funded parklets as part of their post-Covid business stimulation programs.”

Council will also talk to businesses, especially in the revamped Maryborough CBD, where the new footpaths were built to include alfresco dining areas.

“Our focus is firmly on energising the Fraser Coast, especially after the interruptions caused by COVID,” Cr Sanderson said.

“It’s all part of our plan to build better communities together.”
