Maryborough Showgrounds pavilion refurbishment

The main hall at the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park will undergo a $4.4 million refurbishment next year.

At the meeting today (Wednesday, November 24) the Fraser Coast Regional Council awarded the refurbishment contract to BBN Constructions.

The project was outlined in the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park Strategic Plan which was adopted by the Fraser Coast Regional Council in November last year.

“The plan guides the future development and maintenance at the facility,” Fraser Coast Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said.

“One of the first projects to be undertaken is the refurbishment of the main hall which has come to the end of its working life.

“Structural inspections confirmed that the building has reached a point where maintenance is no longer effective or viable.

“Under the $4.4 million refurbishment project the steel frame of the building will be kept and the external walls and inside facilities (toilets and office space) will be demolished.”

The showgrounds and equestrian park is very important to the Fraser Coast, Cr Everard said.

“Council is committed to ensuring that the showgrounds and equestrian centre continue to be a focal point for large outdoor gatherings and events on the Fraser Coast,” he said.

“Many groups use the facility; ranging from the Fraser Coast Show Society, it hosts the annual Lifeline Bookfest as well as an antique fair and is used by Rotary Clubs and schools to host educational events.

“The facility is highly regarded in equestrian circles and our aim is to ensure that it continues to attract large events such as lifestyle expos, caravan and RV rallies and car shows.

“The facility is a fantastic venue and there is great opportunity to attract more events which would be a great boost for the regional economy.”
