The safety of people using the Mary to Bay Rail Trail will be improved by installing a concrete raised priority crossing in Ann Street at its intersection with Boat Harbour Drive.

“The rail trail is part of our Active Transport network which is used by walkers and wheelers to commute. Active Transport use is growing rapidly, and we are accommodating for that growth,” Councillor Zane O’Keefe said.

The project has been awarded to local company Jac Civil, and it is anticipated that work will start in early May and be finished in mid‐July 2023, weather permitting.

The works are partly funded through the Queensland Government Cycle Network Local Government Grants program.

“The intersection upgrade will help regulate traffic flow through one of the busiest intersections along the Mary to Bay Rail Trail,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“Through targeted investments in Active Transport infrastructure, Council improves safety for vulnerable road users and lifts mobility in our community, which improves participation in work, education, and community endeavours.

“Active transport infrastructure reduces our reliance on heavy vehicles to deliver small packages, reduces road congestion, lifts mobility and leads to efficiencies and better environmental outcomes.

“This upgrade complements other recently constructed Active Travel upgrades along Pulgul and Elizabeth Streets and shows Council’s commitment to improving transport infrastructure.”

While the works are underway traffic flow will change:

  • Northbound traffic from Boat Harbour Drive up Ann Street towards the Esplanade will be maintained;
  • Ann Street southbound traffic will be detoured via Torquay Terrace/Honiton Street to the west and via Dayman Street/William Street/Shell Street/Elizabeth Street to the east.
  • A temporary path will be put in place to cater for pedestrian traffic using the mobility corridor.
  • On- street parking on Ann Street near the works will be unavailable for the duration of the works.

Council apologises for the inconvenience caused by the detours and thanks residents for their co-operation during the project.
