Help plant a tree locally on National Tree Day

National Tree Day

Fraser Coast residents are being invited to don gardening gloves and get their hands dirty for a local tree planting event in Tinana on National Tree Day on Sunday 30 July.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said National Tree Day had grown into Australia’s largest community tree-planting and nature care event, with this year’s Council-coordinated event being held on Central Road approximately 150 metres from the corner of Gympie and Central Road, Tinana on the right-hand side.

“The aim of the event is to encourage the community to actively learn about, and participate in, the protection of the local environment. The site chosen this year is semi-cleared and is an ideal location for revegetation, particularly with koala habitat nearby,” he said.

“Planting trees is good for the environment and good for the community. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil, provide shade, and support wildlife.

“All the plants used on the day will be local native species. Those attending should wear hats and sturdy shoes, with all planting equipment to be provided. The site will be suitable for children.

“Come along to connect with nature and join Council’s Natural Environment team for a fun-filled morning getting your hands dirty and making a difference in your local community.”

Access, and on and off-street parking, will be available at the site off Central Road.

Cr Paul Truscott said Council was committed to planting 100,000 trees by 2030 as part of the Greening the Fraser Coast strategy.

“We are already well over halfway to our goal, with trees planted within road verges, drainage lines, parkland areas, water reuse plantations and community revegetation sites,” he said.

“A key focus area for Council under our new Corporate Plan is to ensure we are a resilient and environmentally responsible region and that we are shaping a healthy future for the Fraser Coast and creating a destination for future generations to come.

“Planting 100,000 trees will provide environmental benefits and make the Fraser Coast a more attractive place to live and visit.

“The target is achievable but we’re looking for help from volunteers at events like the community tree planting in Tinana to help us reach that target.”
