Free public Wi-Fi will continue to be available around Maryborough City Hall and the youth precinct in Hervey Bay located around WetSide, SkateSide and Seafront Oval, following the successful completion of a 12-month trial.

At its meeting this week, Fraser Coast Regional Council approved the continued delivery of the public Wi-Fi service and received a report on the 12-month trial.

Cr Zane O’Keefe said the locations were popular spots for both residents and tourists, with thousands using the service during the trial period.

“Creating connected communities through our places, spaces and people is a key focus for Council, and initiatives like this help us achieve that,” he said.

“While we are providing a service for residents, it has an added benefit for tourists, who became ambassadors for our region as they share photos and videos of their holidays here with family and friends.

“It’s all part of Council’s plan to build better communities together.”

Cr O’Keefe said there were 11,975 users during the trial, which was 51 per cent higher than other regional Council Wi-Fi networks, and total usage was 1177 gigabytes, which was 235 per cent higher than other regional Council Wi-Fi networks.

“To make this service even more attractive, Council will remove the one-hour daily usage limit and increase the daily data usage limit to 1 gigabyte,” he said.

The free service operates from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week with extended hours when events occur at Seafront Oval or in the Maryborough CBD.

Free Wi-Fi is also available at the Hervey Bay airport and Fraser Coast libraries.
