Free recycling centre tours

Fraser Coast residents eager to learn more about the journey of their yellow recycling bin contents can sign up for a free tour of the region’s recycling centre in early July.

Cr Michelle Byrne said about 8,000 tonnes of mixed recyclables from the kerbside collection of yellow-lid recycling bins were processed annually at the Materials Recovery Facility (Recycling Centre).

“The recycling centre tours will give residents a better understanding of what they can put in their recycling bin and where it ends up,” she said.

“Residents will learn practical tips and tricks for making recycling easier at home and reducing contamination.

“Acceptable items for the yellow recycling bin include packaging, glass jars and bottles, paper/cardboard, hard plastics, steel and aluminium cans and containers. Items such as clothing, batteries and green waste are not suitable for recycling in these bins.

“Council has an A – Z Recycling Guide on its website with a comprehensive list of what goes where.

“Recycling is good for the environment, good for the economy and good for the local community.

“The top three recycling rules to remember are – never bag it, take the lids off jars and bottles, and  rinse your containers.”

The upcoming free tours at the Materials Recovery Facility in Dundowran include:

  • Tour for school-aged children: Monday 1 July 2024, 10am – 11.30am;
  • Tour for adults: Tuesday 2 July 2024, 10am – 11.30am.

Bookings are essential as places are limited, and attendees must wear closed-in shoes with access via stairs.

To reserve a spot, call Council on 1300 79 49 29. Tea, coffee and a light morning tea will be provided.
