Halcro Street Community Garden unveils its new look
Fraser Coast residents are invited to visit the newly revamped Halcro Street Community Garden in Pialba on Saturday, July 13 to celebrate its grand opening and explore its new features and opportunities.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the $100,000 upgrade included the installation of new footpaths to improve accessibility, the creation of garden beds for both private and community use, general clean-up efforts, and the planting of native and fruit trees.
“The grand opening on Saturday, July 13, is a fantastic opportunity to explore the revamped garden.
“Community gardens are great for strengthening social connections, promoting sustainability, fostering healthy habits, and offer a welcoming and inclusive environment where friendships blossom and lasting memories are created,” he said.
“It’s a great space for local residents to grow produce for themselves and the community while fostering better connections through gardening and food.”
Cr Lachlan Cosgrove said the new footpaths had made the garden more accessible to people in wheelchairs, creating a more inclusive and relaxing space for everyone to enjoy.
“The garden will feature two distinct areas: one for residents who wish to hire a private lot to grow their food, and another for the community to collectively grow produce to share with volunteers, sell or donate to local charities,” he said.
There are 21 private lots for hire, which will be maintained by the private users, and nine community garden beds, which will be maintained by volunteers.
“If you’re retired and you can’t garden at home, then this is a great opportunity to come down and grow some produce, sign up as a volunteer, and help maintain this amazing new community facility.”
Cr Seymour said Council also wanted this space to be a great educational hub where residents could learn about sustainable gardening practices contributing to a greener, more connected and resilient community.
“The launch on Saturday, July 13 will be located at the Community Garden on Halcro Street, Pialba from 9am – midday.
“Community members are free to explore the garden, enjoy a coffee and BBQ, sign up to become a volunteer and pick seeds from our Seed Library.”
