Fraser Coast property owners outside the current waste collection area are being asked to provide feedback on whether they would like to receive paid waste and recycling bin services.

The consultation comes after Cr Phil Truscott recently tabled a petition at a Council meeting from residents requesting a waste service in the Owanyilla area between Maryborough and Tiaro.

“Council is keen to determine the level of support from Owanyilla residents for a paid waste and recycling service,” Cr Truscott said.

“As the current route for the waste collection service contract drives past the Owanyilla area, a paid waste service could start by the end of the year if residents decide they want it.”

Cr David Lee said Council was also asking other Fraser Coast property owners outside the current defined waste collection area to express their interest in receiving a paid waste service in preparation for the new Waste Collection Contract in 2022.

“Currently residents outside the waste collection area pay a $105 annual waste management fee and are eligible for up to 24 waste vouchers, which allows them to dispose of the equivalent of one standard 240 litre wheelie bin per voucher,” he said.

“If a paid waste and recycling collection service was introduced, residents would instead pay a $355.20 charge per year entitling them to weekly waste and fortnightly recycling bin services.

“It would also mean they would receive replacement bins at no extra charge and have the opportunity to request an additional service for a small fee at busier times of the year, such as the Christmas/New Year period.

“However, it’s important to note that if a kerbside collection is introduced, property owners will no longer be eligible for waste disposal vouchers and the mandatory service charge will apply to all property owners within the expanded waste collection area.”

Cr Truscott said a dedicated project page had been set up on Council’s Engagement Hub website - https://frasercoast.engagementhub.com.au/waste-services-owanyilla-and-other-areas

“The project page includes a survey for Owanyilla residents to complete and a submission form for residents in other Fraser Coast areas wishing to express their interest in receiving a paid waste service,” he said.

“The survey is open until Sunday 27 September and residents can register on the page to keep up to date with the project as it progresses.

“Council will assess the feedback from residents in combination with feedback from the contractors to determine the feasibility of adding places currently outside the waste collection area.”
