New Materials Recovery Facility

What’s happening: A new $31 million recycling sorting centre is almost finished at the Maryborough landfill. Operations will start in early 2025, replacing the old facility in Dundowran.

Why: The new centre is three times larger and uses advanced technology to sort recyclables faster and more accurately. It will reduce waste sent to landfill and improve recycling quality.
A key feature of the new facility is an expanded education room to raise awareness and encourage residents to adopt better recycling habits.

When: Construction is nearly complete, with operations expected to begin in early 2025.

How much will it cost: $31 million.

Community impact: The new centre will help reduce waste, improve recycling rates, and create opportunities for innovative recycling initiatives, like making park benches from plastic or cat litter from cardboard.
