Libraries bookmark winners

A fresh batch of colourful bookmarks created by locals has landed at Fraser Coast Libraries branches following the judging of the Design-a-Bookmark Competition.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour congratulated the winners and praised the efforts of everyone who entered the annual contest.

“It’s great to see the creativity of our community displayed in the bookmarks and I’d encourage everyone to visit their nearest library branch to grab some,” he said.

Cr Seymour said the winners were Valentina Valdiva and Aarav Ajith in the six years and under category, Tim Hebe in the seven to 11 years age range, Kelly Foster in the 12-17 years group and Sonja Clifford in the 18-plus section.

He said as well as seeing their designs in print, the winners each received a $50 Fraser Coast Open for Business gift card.

Competition judge, Fraser Coast Regional Council Exhibitions and Public Programs Officer Bronwyn Clark-Coolee, was pleased with the artistry demonstrated by all of the winners.

She said Valentina’s entry conveyed a sense of wonder about the world and the galaxy.

“Your eye is drawn through the composition from the centre circle up to the blue and then down to the contrasting mass of orange,” Ms Clark-Coolee said.

Aarav’s rainbow band of colour was clear, strong and joyful and she hoped people’s reading experiences matched “the clear-hearted appeal of this lovely drawing”.

Ms Clark-Coolee complimented the vitality of Tim’s entry and the delightful rendering of the green frogs which reminded us about the joy of observing the world and the interconnectedness of things.

She said Kelly’s bold design was perfect, not only for marking a place in a book but also for giving people the energy to start reading again thanks to the red and magenta colours.

Sonja’s thoughtful composition, restricted colour palette and tonal shifts combined to create a dynamic and pleasing design.

“It is both grounded and dreamy at the same time, with the repeated but varied motif of the circle suggesting an effervescent stream of thought bubble arising from what might just have been read,” Ms Clark-Coolee said.

The bookmarks are available for free from Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads branches.
