Orchid House closing for minor renovations
The Orchid House at the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens will close for nearly three weeks from next Monday (26 July) for minor renovations.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Orchid House was a popular attraction for both locals and tourists, offering a unique opportunity to see rare orchids in flower.
“The Fraser Coast has the largest publicly owned orchid collection in Australia, with the Orchid House expanded two years ago so we could showcase even more of our 5500 orchids,” he said.
“Following on from the major expansion, Council’s Open Space and Environment team will now do some minor renovations to make the facility even more attractive and ensure the space is used as effectively as possible.
“Over the next few weeks, Council will be upgrading the garden beds - including adding a feature garden bed, increasing hanging space through mesh roofing for particular orchid types, upgrading the maintenance area and adding new outdoor furniture.
“We thank everyone for their patience while this work is carried out to allow the Orchid House to return in a few weeks better and brighter than ever.”
The Orchid House will be closed from Monday 26 July 2021 through to Wednesday 11 August 2021 for the renovations, re-opening on Thursday 12 August 2021.
Entry to the Orchid House is free with the facility open Mondays to Fridays from 9am to 2.30pm.
The work at the Orchid House follows a major renovation of the bush chapel in the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens, which was completed in November 2020 with the support of a Queensland Government grant.
“The Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are one of the jewels in the crown on the Fraser Coast, situation on 6000 year old dunes spanning 26 hectares,” Cr Seymour said.
“The gardens boast a wide variety of established plants of the Wide Bay and Great Sandy region along with walking tracks, an Australian bush tucker garden, a Chinese garden, labyrinth, the Orchid House and a natural playground.
“The Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens are just one of many fantastic outdoor spaces on the Fraser Coast, which I encourage locals and visitors to get out and enjoy to stay healthy and active in our community.”
