Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to ‘Find a Frog in February’.

Cr Jade Wellings said the annual citizen science program aimed to build community awareness of frogs and their needs, with Fraser Coast Regional Council supporting a special workshop and ‘frog hunt’ in Toogoom next week.

“The Mary River catchment is home to over 40 frog species, with many of these listed as threatened,” she said.

“Frogs can be affected by changes in the air, water and land. Collecting information on their whereabouts and habitats helps to better manage the environment to protect them in the future.

“As part of the ‘Find a Frog in February’ program, residents are encouraged to get out and about to find frogs and submit their sightings and recordings.

“The Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee has a range of information about the Find a Frog in February program under the ‘projects’ section of their website – https://mrccc.org.au/frog-in-february/ - including an interactive map and record sheets.

“Residents can also download the iNaturalist phone app to submit frog photos and records.”

Cr Wellings said Council’s Natural Environment team was joining with the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee to run a special workshop at the Toogoom Community Hall and frog surveys next Wednesday 16 February.

“The workshop will kick off with a frog talk by Eva Ford at 5pm, which will be followed by frog surveys starting at 30 – 34 Jeppesen Road in Toogoom from 7pm,” she said.

“Those getting involved are encouraged to bring a headlamp or torch, and wear field clothes.

“RSVPs are essential by 15 February. Residents can RSVP by contacting the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee on email at admin@mrcc.org.au or phone 5482 4766.”
