Some books and other items at Hervey Bay Library will be shifted during the March 17 to 20 temporary closure in preparation for the first stage of the roof rehabilitation project.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor David Lewis said the internal reorganisation was designed to minimise disruption to library users during the 18-to-20-month project.

“When the library reopens on Monday 21 March after the four-day shutdown, visitors will notice that some sections of the collection have moved to different areas,” he said.

“There will be plenty of signs and staff around the library to help everyone find what they need in the new layout.”

Cr Lewis said barriers would also be set up to separate construction areas from public areas.

He said the changes would allow work on the roof to begin as soon as possible.

Cr Lewis said a recent inspection of the 27-year-old building identified the roof was nearing the end of its working life and it would be rehabilitated during the next 18 to 20 months, weather permitting.

“We thank the Queensland Government for providing a $1.5 million grant through the Works for Queensland program to assist us with this project,” he said.

Cr Lewis said the upcoming four-day closure would allow contractors to assess the work required to rehabilitate the roof, while also providing an excellent opportunity to make the internal reshuffle required to allow roof works to start.

Although Hervey Bay Library and its returns chutes would be closed from March 17 to 20, the other library branches in Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads would be open during their regular hours, he said.

“We thank residents in advance for their patience during this time,” Cr Lewis said.
