The capacity of the Pulgul Creek wastewater treatment plant in Hervey Bay will be expanded to ensure it will handle the city’s continued growth.

At its meeting this week (Wednesday, March 23), Fraser Coast Regional Council awarded a $1.25 million tender from Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd to design the project.

“Hervey Bay is continuing to grow. To accommodate the growth, there is the need to increase the city’s capacity to treat sewage, including the recycled water reuse system,” Councillor Darren Everard said.

“Currently the Pulgul sewage treatment plant performs well, but it is running at about 90% of its design capacity.

“The proposed plant upgrade will increase the treatment capacity to 10 megalitres a day to a Class A recycled water quality.

“This is a great opportunity to embrace the latest wastewater treatment technology to ensure we have the best environmental outcomes available.”

The Hervey Bay catchment is anticipated to grow by 12,400 dwellings by 2031.

The project is part of Council’s commitment to ensuring the region’s treatment systems operate at the highest standard.
