Dogs Day Out a key part of animal management strategy

A ‘Dogs Day Out’ is being planned by the Fraser Coast Regional Council under its new Domestic Animal Management Strategy.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said the strategy covered a range of issues including responsible pet ownership education, registration requirements, enforcement of local and state laws, and the operation of Council’s pounds and adoption centre.

“A big focus will be on education,” he said.

“There are several state and local laws pet owners need to know about, such as the requirement for pets to be registered, microchipped and desexed on the Fraser Coast.

“Dog owners also need to know about the requirements for walking their pets, keeping animals under effective control and the places they can go, especially if they want to go off-leash.

“To start the education program, Council is planning a series of Dogs Day Out fun days for later in the year.

The fun days will include a mix of market stalls showcasing products for pets as well as education segments and talks.

The strategy, which was created after consultation with the community, also covers the types of animal management services that Council would provide across the region.

“Council provides a variety of animal management services, from rangers who investigate the thousands of reports every year about dog attacks, barking dogs and wandering animals, to dedicated pounds and adoption facilities,” Cr Truscott said.
