Maryborough Pool

The Maryborough Aquatic Centre’s indoor program pool has reopened after a short closure for repairs with some surprising new features.

Large bright cartoon sea creatures - including a seahorse, clown fish and starfish - have been hung from the pool roof to assist with the centre’s Learn to Swim program.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the new animals would encourage children to float on their backs as they try to view them.

“It is essential children learn about being safe in and around water,” he said.

“Learning to swim provides the confidence and ability to get involved in all aquatic activities.

“Council is always looking for ways to improve our facilities and further assist children with life-saving skills. I’m sure these new creatures will be very popular with kids and their parents.”

This new learn to swim tool is on the back of the Maryborough Aquatic Centre, winning AustSwim State and National awards for best large swim centre in 2022.

Cr Seymour said the region’s swim programs were ability-based and age-appropriate, catering for students from 6 months of age to adults.

“Our classes use student-to-teacher ratios, which facilitate faster learning,” he said.

“All of our instructors are industry qualified and attend regular training to keep up to date with current industry trends and standards.

“This is all a part of Council’s plan to ensure we have a safe, healthy and active community.”

Other works undertaken during the closure included repairing the hail damaged roof and silicone resealing.

“We thank everyone for their patience and understanding while this important work was carried out,” Cr Seymour said.
