Hundreds of planners from across Australia will descend on the Fraser Coast next year for a major conference expected to inject tens of thousands of dollars into the local economy.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the Planning Institute of Australia’s 2024 state conference would be held on K’gari from 4 – 6 September, with about 200 to 300 planners from across Australia and New Zealand expected to attend.

“The conference is expected to cover a range of planning themes such as density, infrastructure and design, but is also likely to incorporate themes relevant to our region such as heritage planning, building reuse and urban revitalisation,” he said.

“Planners are important staff in Councils as they help shape and guide the physical, social and economic development of communities.

“Planners are essential for creating well-designed, sustainable and livable communities. They balance the needs and desires of the community with regulatory requirements, environmental considerations and long-term planning goals.

“We look forward to welcoming planning delegates to our region next September.”

Cr Jan Hegge said the Fraser Coast was fast gaining a reputation as a major events and conference destination with the Planning Institute event another opportunity to promote the region.

“The Fraser Coast has hosted a range of major events such as the Jumping Queensland State Championships and the Queensland Cuboree at the Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park, through to school AFL, rugby, triathlon and cross country championships in Hervey Bay,” she said.

“We’ve also hosted Brisbane Roar Football Club and Queensland Reds rugby union training camps while hundreds of music teachers and doctors attended separate conferences here this year.

“These events are worth millions of dollars to our region, as visitors spend money with local businesses such as accommodation providers, restaurants and cafes.

“With the direct flights we now have to and from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, we hope to attract even more high-profile events to our region.

“It’s all part of Council’s plan to build better communities together and grow a strong, diversified economy here on the Fraser Coast.”
