Building a more inclusive Fraser Coast together

Applications are now open for local residents to join Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Inclusive Access Advisory Committee (IAAC) and help improve access for individuals living with disability.

Committee chair Cr John Weiland said the purpose of the IAAC is to provide strategic policy advice and develop solutions to issues related to responding to the needs and aspirations of people with disability.

“The team will look at all aspects of community life, from the built environment and urban design, as well as key Council services and community activities and events; provide advice and feedback on ways to overcome barriers and make community life truly inclusive for all,” he said.

“The IAAC will meet four times a year and will not only influence policy but will have input into Council’s Disability Action Plan and assist Council to become a leader in delivering infrastructure and services of all abilities.

“This may include people with disability, carers, seniors, service providers, young people and residents from other cultural backgrounds.”

Cr Weiland said Council was continuously seeking ways to enhance accessibility on the Fraser Coast, including the upcoming launch of a mobile mapping service for residents and visitors.

“Mobile mapping will enable our most vulnerable residents to find the best footpaths using state-of-the-art technology, providing the latest data on footpath conditions, accessibility to public transport, parking, and amenities," he said.

Cr Weiland said Council was looking for eight community members to join the team who have personal or professional experience and commitment to providing equity of access across the Fraser Coast.

“By working together we can identify, raise awareness, and determine approaches that will strengthen the community and Council’s ability to address social issues,” he said.

“It’s all part of our plan to build better communities together.”
