Traffic improvements for Elizabeth Street

A raised signalised pedestrian and cyclist crossing is being installed on Elizabeth Street in Urangan to make the busy road safer and more accessible.

Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said works to improve traffic and pedestrian flow on Elizabeth Street are starting this week.

“Elizabeth Street is a major link in Council’s road network and carries about 10,000 vehicles a day,” he said.

"These improvements will not only enhance traffic flow but also increase the usability of the Mary to Bay Rail Trail crossing on Elizabeth Street.

"The Mary to Bay Rail Trail, which extends from Maryborough to the Urangan Pier, is a vital link for cyclists who will now feel safer and more connected thanks to these upgrades."

Cr O’Keefe said this project, which is estimated to cost $600,000, was identified for completion as part of Council’s Active Travel Strategy.

“The State Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Programme is funding up to 50% of the cost of the construction capped at $375,000 with Council funding the remainder,” he said.

“Project works include the removal of existing sections of kerb, concrete islands and rubber speed humps and the installation of new kerb and grated concrete channel.

“It also includes the installation of pedestrian traffic signals, construction of concrete footpaths, street signage and street furniture.

“A traffic management system will be in place with works expected to be completed by October, weather permitting.”
