Citizenship Day 2024

More than 180 Fraser Coast residents have become Australian citizens at special ceremonies at Maryborough City Hall today as part of Australian Citizenship Day celebrations.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said this year marked the 75th anniversary of Australian citizenship, with today’s ceremonies in Maryborough one of hundreds held across the country, welcoming thousands of new citizens nationwide.

“Our 187 new citizens on the Fraser Coast range in age from two to 92 and were born in 33 different countries. About a third – 62 people – are New Zealand-born,” he said.

“Australian Citizenship Day is an opportunity for all Australians, whether by birth or by choice, to reflect on and celebrate what’s great about being Australian.

“Australian citizenship is a shared identity – a common bond which unites all Australians while celebrating our diversity.

“For those taking the pledge, it’s an unforgettable moment of commitment, signalling the start of an exciting new chapter. For those of us welcoming them, it’s a privilege to share in their journey and celebrate this milestone as they join our community.

“I encourage everyone across the Fraser Coast to take a moment to reflect on and affirm their Australian citizenship today as we warmly welcome our newest citizens.”

The Mayor was joined at today’s ceremonies by fellow Fraser Coast Regional Councillors, Fraser Coast Young Citizen of the Year George Rowland and Reese Griffiths from Riverside Christian College, who led the national anthem and performed “I Still Call Australia Home”.
