Cameras and free parking to ease airport congestion
Fraser Coast Regional Council is urging residents and travellers at the Hervey Bay Airport to use the new 30-minute free parking option instead of waiting in the taxi and two-minute drop-off zone.
Director Strategy, Development and Community Gerard Carlyon said Council was introducing parking enforcement cameras in the taxi and two-minute drop-off zones to ensure compliance and improve the airport experience.
“Council launched the 30-minute free parking option in July to reduce congestion in the drop-off zone, make parking more efficient, providing a more convenient and affordable option for travellers,” he said.
“While many have embraced the free parking, some continue to misuse the taxi and two-minute drop-off zone, leaving their vehicles parked for extended periods.
“This behaviour disrupts traffic flow and causes unnecessary delays.
“With the increase in passengers since Jetstar introduced direct flights between Hervey Bay and Melbourne, unfortunately, we’ve also seen a rise in illegal parking and drivers refusing to move when requested.
“Most concerningly, Council staff have faced verbal abuse from individuals failing to follow the rules.”
Mr Carlyon said the new parking enforcement cameras would allow staff to remotely monitor the drop-off zone and issue fines, ensuring compliance and improving safety.
“We encourage everyone to take advantage of the 30-minute free parking option. It helps ease congestion, reduces stress, and improves the overall airport experience,” he said.
The Hervey Bay Airport offers commercial flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Lady Elliot Island and K’gari.
The airport’s departure lounge was expanded earlier this year, while work on a new ticketless car parking system is almost complete.
