Lower speed limits planned for Hervey Bay’s Esplanade
Fraser Coast Regional Council has endorsed lower speed limits on sections of the Hervey Bay Esplanade to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers, while creating a more consistent traffic environment.
At its meeting today (Wednesday, February 26), Council agreed to progress changes that would see speed limits reduced along key sections of the Esplanade, including:
- Hervey Street to Robert Street: from 50km/hr to 40km/hr
- Elizabeth Street to Pier Street and Pier Street from Esplanade to King Street (Urangan): from 50km/hr to 40km/hr.
Further speed limit reductions will be considered in the future, with the goal of lowering the speed limit on the Esplanade from Beach Road through to Pier Street to 40km/hr as supporting infrastructure is introduced.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said the changes align with the Esplanade Master Plan Guideline, which prioritises connectivity and pedestrian safety.
“The Hervey Bay Esplanade is one of our region’s most popular areas, attracting high levels of vehicle and foot traffic as people access the foreshore, parks, businesses and recreational spaces,” he said.
“It currently has a mix of different speed zones, so creating a more consistent approach will make it safer and easier for everyone who uses it. Lowering speeds – particularly in high pedestrian areas – will help reduce the risk of crashes and serious injuries.”
A review of crash data from the past five years found there were 40 reported crashes on the Esplanade, including nine involving pedestrians.
“The speed changes will help make the Esplanade safer for everyone, whether they’re walking, cycling or driving. It’s a practical step toward improving the liveability of the Fraser Coast,” Cr O’Keefe said.
Council will now submit the speed limit changes to the Speed Management Committee for endorsement before implementation in coming months. Further reductions will be considered as infrastructure improvements are introduced in the future.
