Morning Melodies

Fraser Coast aged-care residents have been enjoying live music performances from the comfort of their homes thanks to a new initiative from the Brolga Theatre.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the popular Morning Melodies program hit the road this year, taking live performances to seven aged-care facilities.

"Many of our senior residents can no longer visit the theatre in person, so we wanted to take the joy of live music to them," he said.

"By delivering these performances to aged-care facilities, we’re fostering social connection, well-being, and the magic of live entertainment for those who might otherwise miss out.

“The final concert in the series wrapped up this week at Blue Care Masters Lodge Retirement Living in Urraween, with residents enthusiastically joining in with singing, clapping, and even dancing.”

Cr Seymour said research has shown that music, singing, and movement can have profound benefits for older adults, particularly those in aged care which was evident in the way residents responded to the performances.

"Music has the power to spark joy, bring back fond memories, and create a real sense of connection," he said.

“Each one-hour musical event featured Brolga performers and local musicians, creating an interactive and engaging experience that helped combat isolation and promote emotional well-being.

“With fewer transport options available to bring aged-care residents to the theatre since COVID-19, the decision to take Morning Melodies to them proved to be a resounding success.

“Given the overwhelmingly positive feedback, plans are now underway to extend the program later this year, ensuring even more seniors can experience the joy and benefits of live music.”
