The curtain is rising once again at the Brolga Theatre, with the much-loved venue reopening this week after a series of behind-the-scenes upgrades.

Fraser Coast Regional Council temporarily closed the theatre’s auditorium in late January to allow phase one of revitalisation and renewal works to take place, ensuring the theatre remains a high-quality venue for performers and audiences alike.

Arts and Culture spokesperson Cr Sara Diana Faraj said the works were about preserving the Brolga’s reputation as one of regional Queensland’s premier performing arts venues.

“While many of the improvements may not be immediately obvious, they play a vital role in maintaining a professional, welcoming and accessible venue for the community,” she said.

“We thank the public for their patience during this time and can’t wait to welcome everyone back for a fantastic week of live performances.”

Works completed over the past two months include:

  • Extensive painting throughout the foyer, auditorium and stage, including high-level work using scaffolding, lifts and abseiling;
  • Upgrades to technical desks in the stage and auditorium;
  • New lighting and sound systems in the foyer;
  • Replacement of key fire hydrant system components;
  • A deep clean of the venue from top to bottom.

The upgrades have been timed to coincide with the Brolga Theatre’s 25th-anniversary celebrations in July, with more improvements to roll out gradually over the next six months. These include:

  • New foyer furniture;
  • A new Butchulla welcome statement with artwork and words by Shawn Wondunna-Foley;
  • New seating in the auditorium.

The theatre reopens just in time for a big week of performances, starting with The Black Blues Brothers tonight (Tuesday 1 April), followed by A Girl’s Guide to World War on Friday (4 April), The Travelling Wilburys Collection on Saturday (5 April) and Swing Heist on Sunday (6 April).
