Wet weather and the discovery of a historical clay spoon drain are among the reasons for a range of changes to local road projects on the Fraser Coast.

Cr Denis Chapman said Council was responsible for about 2700 kilometres of roads and footpaths throughout the region, with about a third of the capital works budget allocated to maintaining roads, footpaths, bridges and drainage.

“Council has a range of road projects underway at the moment, with the biggest project the Boundary Road extension, which will create a new east-west connection in Hervey Bay,” he said.

“As part of this project, Denmans Camp Road between Boundary Road and Cupania Way in Hervey Bay will be closed for a fortnight while water mains and sewer mains are relocated.

“The intersection of Denmans Camp Road and Boundary Road will remain open while the works are being completed with local traffic only able to enter Denmans Camp Road from the north for access to the Kalang Respite Centre.

“A detour via Boundary Road, Tavistock Street and Colyton Street will be put in place while the works are being completed. This stage of the works, which were due to start this week, were delayed due to recent wet weather and will now start on 28 February and be completed by 13 March.”

Cr Chapman said work on the Lennox Street road reconstruction project in Maryborough also faced some minor delays following the discovery of another section of a historical clay spoon drain between North Street and Churchill Street.

“Council’s consultant archaeologist has attended the site and confirmed Council can remove the drain consistent with the approval provided with the first find last year, while the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage and Science is also being updated,” he said.

Other Council road projects underway include:

  • Road pavement replacement works are occurring at Southerden Street between Honiton Street and Robert Street in Torquay with Southerden Street to be closed from 23 February to 9 March (local traffic only will be permitted);
  • Roadworks on Eatonvale Road in Tinana are coming to an end with the bitumen seal completed and the road open to two-way traffic. Only minor works such as the installation of guideposts and linemarking remain to be completed;
  • Teddington Road reconstruction works have been delayed due to the presence of groundwater. It is anticipated work will recommence later this week, weather permitting.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the range of road projects underway, and thank everyone for their patience and understanding while this important work is carried out,” Cr Chapman said.

“It’s all part of Council’s plan to build better communities together, and provide safer and smoother journeys for the people of the Fraser Coast.”
