Fraser Coast dog owners who have not registered or renewed registration for their animals can expect a knock on the door from Council Animal Management Officers in the coming months.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said Council issued just over 20,000 registration notices last year and about 1,600 owners had not yet responded.

“Reminder notices were issued earlier this year to encourage dog owners to reregister their pets,” he said.

“The next step, the annual dog registration inspection program, has started and will run through to the end of October.”

Cr Truscott said registering animals had benefits for owners.

“If an animal is found wandering or is taken to the pound, registered dogs can be reunited with their owners very quickly,” he said.

“It is harder to reunite dogs with their owners when they are unregistered or not microchipped, or the information on the microchip is out of date.

“It is important those details are kept up to date with Council and the group which holds their pet’s microchip data.

“And remember, if you have a new dog, registration is free the first time you register your animal in the Fraser Coast region.”

Dog registration fees offset some of the costs of our animal management program which includes enforcement, educational programs, and facilities such as the two pounds, fenced off-leashed areas and free doggy doo bags that are placed in dispensers along the foreshore and puppy playgrounds.

“In the last 12 months Council received more than 6,000 animal-related requests, including almost 600 complaints about barking dogs and nearly 600 reports of wandering dogs.”

If you have not registered or renewed your pet’s registration, or your pet’s details have changed, please contact Council on 1300 79 49 29 and talk to a Customer Service Officer.
