Celebrate NAIDOC Week on the Fraser Coast

From flag raising to community discussion and art exhibitions, the Fraser Coast is set to host a range of events to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2022 (July 3-10), and everyone is invited to join in the fun.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! which calls on our community to rally for systemic change and continue to support and secure institutional, structural, collaborative and cooperative reforms.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the NAIDOC week activities were set to be a cultural highlight of the year.

“The Fraser Coast has a colourful and vibrant cultural life, and Council is keen to ensure the community has opportunities to appreciate arts, heritage and cultural diversity,” he said.

“NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

“The 2022 theme invites us to act decisively and shape a future based on justice, equity, and proper recognition of First Nations peoples.”

Key events Council is hosting include:

• A pop-up exhibition by the Maryborough Aboriginal Women's Arts Group in the new Gatakers Creative Space from Sunday 3 July to Sunday 10 July;
• A discussion panel with local indigenous artists at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery on Wednesday 6 July at 11am;
• Butchulla stories in The Yarning Circle at The Story Bank on Wednesday 6 July;
• A flag raising ceremony on Town Hall Green in Maryborough on Thursday 7 July;
• Stand tall and strong fashion parade at the Gatakers Artspace on Saturday 9 July from 2pm to 4pm.
