Fraser Coast Water Grid

The Fraser Coast Regional Council has completed a detailed business case for the Fraser Coast Water Grid, which would connect the Hervey Bay and Maryborough water supply schemes. This initiative involves constructing a two-way pipeline and pumping stations to form an integrated regional water network.

The Fraser Coast Water Grid will enable treated water to be transferred between major service areas, enhancing water security, reliability, and efficient use of available water sources. The ability to redirect water across the region provides additional resilience in case of plant failures, natural disasters, or maintenance activities.

The economic analysis highlights substantial community benefits, with cost savings of approximately $88 million through avoiding severe water restrictions. Preliminary estimates suggest construction costs of about $60 million, with the Council actively seeking funding from the Queensland and Australian Governments' water grid programs.

The project aligns with the Fraser Coast Water Supply Security Strategy, which outlines critical infrastructure investments, including a desalination plant by 2036, to ensure a secure, reliable, and affordable water future for the region. With the business case now completed, detailed design, approvals, and obtaining funding are the next steps in advancing the Fraser Coast Water Grid.
